Millennials (Generations Are All About Time)
This one’s a stretch, but I very much enjoyed this Buzzfeed article explaining why we all feel dumber, more overwhelmed, and less in control of our own time and lives these past few years. The article is called “The 2010s Broke Our Sense of Time” and I feel like you either want to read it or you don’t, so I’m not going to spend more time trying to explain it!
P.S. The images in that article are distracting because they flash very quickly, please don’t let that stop you from reading the article!
P.P.S. A lot of T**** analogies, so prepare for that. Also, not sure the T**** analogies are working?
A More or Less Serious Item (When Your Boss Steals All Your Money)
You there, the wage worker! Your boss might be stealing your wages! GQ has the scoop on how the biggest type of theft that happens every year is wage theft: unpaid overtime, stolen tips, and simply not being paid for all of the work that you’ve done. More than that, cities are starting to finally, finally do something about it by actually penalizing employers who commit the crime of wage theft. And the very biggest and baddest to do it is Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner, who has formed a task force to combat wage theft.
Your boss STEALING your wages!!!
This Week’s Theme: THANKSGIVING!
Just a bunch of meditations on Thanksgiving.
When is the right time to have Thanksgiving dinner? The Atlantic’s Joe Pinsker says 4pm for reasons (mostly so there’s not too much anticipation). I say 3pm because how long am I expected to stay full from breakfast? You: decide for yourself!
Need something to talk about this Thanksgiving? The Cut has you covered.
Want to watch a movie on Thanksgiving? Check out this unhinged list from the New York Times, which includes the Katie Holmes movie Pieces of April and really good streaming info.
Happy Thanksgiving!
P.S. I’ve surely sent this before, but please enjoy my favorite SNL Thanksgiving sketch.
Politics (Not To Single Anybody Out, But)
I have two very scathing articles about Mayor Pete to share with you. Mayor Pete seems nice enough (his husband is nice, his dog is nice, etc.) but he’s got a big, fat racial blind spot when it comes to his politics and a big, fat interest in capitalistic approaches to government.
First, read this Current Affairs articles that boils down to a scathing review of his memoir Shortest Way Home. The author points out troubling features of Buttigieg’s mayoral term (including a shrewd campaign to erase “blight” in South Bend that displaced a number of homeowners who couldn’t keep up with the new home upkeep requirements) and troubling features of his personality (that Pete seems to be want to president because it would be good for him and not necessarily that good for any of the people he’s governing).
Then read this very straightforward takedown of Mayor Pete’s basic and misguided view on education disparities in lower-income, minority neighborhoods from The Root.
Again, this feels unfair of me to a certain extent, but these links arewere getting at something about this candidate that feels not yet widely covered: Mayor Pete is a centrist with who, from a progressive viewpoint, has a worrisome policy track record.
A Celebrity Thinger (Barefoot Contessa Edition)
Double link whammy this week from the one, the ONLY Ina Garten!
First, here are some Thanksgiving recipes from Ina Garten. Not really for making, since it’s Thanksgiving already, but for looking at the pictures and remembering that we love Ina Garten.
Second, here is a video of Ina & Seth Meyers going day drinking which is EXTREMELY wholesome content. Ten minutes of truly glorious daytime TV.
Finally, in case you’ve never read about Ina Garten’s life, here is her wikipedia page, which I love reading because Ina is a big ol’ badass.
You, so excited, clicking through these Ina Garten links.
Would You Rather? (Elite Novelist Edition)
Would you rather buy a Jonathan Safran Foer-inspired piece of clothing for $500 or only be allowed to read his emails with Natalie Portman and NOTHING ELSE for the next three months?
A Recommendation (A podcast! Oooo)
A lot of you are probably already listening to celebrity news-centric podcast Who? Weekly because it’s been around for a minute, but I finally gave in and started listening (I traditionally loathe podcasts) and it’s incredible. If you have any kind of penchant for celebrity news or obscure pop culture info (think Ryan Phillippe’s most recent girlfriend or that guy from This Is Us getting divorced), I can’t remember Bobby Finger & Lindsey Weber’s guidance enough. It’s available on Spotify, Apple podcasts, and I’m sure other places where podcasts happen.
